“Behold, all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.”
The prophet Jeremiah brings to us the Word of God, as He speaks to the children of Israel. He begins by declaring that all souls belong to Him.What does God’s word teach us in the church today? There are several things that this verses teaches us. First, we all belong to the Lord. From the beginning, when He created mankind in His image (Genesis 1:26-27), up to this very day every soul that has lived and died belongs to God. We are not our own but were bought with a price.
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.”
As a living soul, made by the breath of God, we must remember that we belong to Him, to live in a holy manner apart from sin. Second, and lastly, God speaks through Jeremiah that the soul which sins shall die. When we sin, we separate ourselves from God who is the giver and essence of life. So, being separated from Him will lead the soul to death. We must be mindful of these words and seek God daily and be separate from sin. He is life and He gives it to those that seek Him.
